What is emergency contraception, and what options are available?
Emergency contraception is a method used to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure, such as a broken condom. It’s a safe and effective way to reduce the risk of unintended pregnancy when taken within a specific timeframe. Most morning after pills are effective if taken within the first 72 hours from the unprotected sex.
One of the most common types of emergency contraception is the morning after pill. There are two types of pills available from our pharmacy: ellaOne and Levonorgestrel. Both work by preventing or delaying ovulation and are most effective when taken as soon as possible after unprotected sex.
What is ellaOne and how does it work?
ellaOne is one of the most effective forms of emergency contraception. It contains ulipristal acetate, which works by altering the activity of progesterone—a hormone crucial for ovulation. By delaying or preventing ovulation, ellaOne reduces the chance of pregnancy.
ellaOne can be taken up to 120 hours (five days) after unprotected sex, but it’s most effective the sooner you take it. Unlike some other emergency contraceptive pills, it works well throughout the entire five-day window. This option is especially useful if you’re further into your cycle or unsure when ovulation might have occurred.
What is the Levonorgestrel pill and how does it work?
The Levonorgestrel pill is another form of emergency contraception. It contains the hormone levonorgestrel, which prevents or delays ovulation, making it less likely for an egg to be fertilised. This pill is most effective when taken within 72 hours (three days) of unprotected sex, with its effectiveness decreasing the longer you wait. While it works best within the first 12 hours, it remains a reliable option for up to three days.
Levonorgestrel is often chosen for its availability and straightforward use. It’s important to remember that like all emergency contraception, it doesn’t guarantee protection against pregnancy, so taking it as soon as possible is key. Our pharmacists will guide you through taking the pill and the next steps for making sure that it’s worked for you.

Things to remember about emergency contraception
While emergency contraception is highly effective, it’s not 100% guaranteed to prevent pregnancy. It’s also not intended to replace regular contraceptive methods, so it’s a good idea to review your ongoing contraception options with your GP if you’re not sure something’s working for you.
Emergency contraceptive pills won’t protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs), so if you’ve had a condom break it’s important to get an STI test as well.
If you’re unsure about any aspect of emergency contraception or have questions, don’t hesitate to ask. We’re here to support you every step of the way.
When time is of the essence, you can rely on our pharmacy for fast, friendly, and professional care. Whether you need ellaOne or the Levonorgestrel pill, we’re here for you.
