Emergency Contraception
If you need emergency contraception, the morning-after pill can help prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex or a contraceptive slip-up. It works by delaying ovulation, and the sooner you take it, the more effective it is. There are different pill options available, with varying time frames for use – some can be taken up to 3 days, while others work up to 5 days after unprotected sex.

How do emergency contraceptive pills work?
The morning after pill works by delaying ovulation and preventing a pregnancy. It does not terminate an existing pregnancy. If you have already ovulated then the morning after pill will not work and you will need to use another form of emergency contraception such as an IUD (Intrauterine Device).
How to the emergency contraceptive pill?
You use emergency contraception by taking 1 emergency contraceptive pill within 3 or 5 days after sex, depending on the type of pill.
The 2 types of pill are:
- pills with levonorgestrel (brands include Levonelle): you need to take this pill within 3 days (72 hours) after sex
- pills with ulipristal acetate (brands include ellaOne): you need to take this pill within 5 days (120 hours) after sex
As the pill delays ovulation, the sooner you take it after you have unprotected sex the better to increase the chances of the pill working.
