A daily pill, not a weekly injection

Both treatments use semaglutide to help regulate appetite. The difference is how you take it. For people who would rather not inject, the tablet is a genuine alternative.

We know you might have a few questions, so we’ve gathered the most common ones right here. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with our team.

The Wegovy pill is an oral, once daily tablet form of semaglutide, the same active ingredient used in the Wegovy injection pen. It was approved by the MHRA on 11 June 2026 and is the first GLP-1 weight loss tablet licensed in the UK. It is used for weight management in eligible adults, alongside a reduced calorie diet and increased physical activity.

The main difference is how you take it. The pill is a small tablet taken once a day, while the injection is given once a week. The tablet is needle free, which many people prefer. Both use semaglutide to help manage appetite. The pill does need a specific morning routine to work properly, which is covered below.

The manufacturer expects the pill to be available on private prescription within weeks of the June 2026 approval. It is not yet available on the NHS and remains under review by NICE. Crest is preparing to offer it as soon as supply allows. Join our early access list to be notified the moment it is ready.

It is licensed for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight related health condition. It is a prescription only medicine, so suitability is always decided through a clinical assessment with our pharmacy team.

You take one tablet each morning on an empty stomach, with a small sip of plain water (up to 120ml). Swallow it whole without crushing or chewing, then wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything else, or taking other medicines. The dose is increased gradually over several months, starting low and building up under your prescriber's guidance.

In the OASIS 4 trial, adults taking the highest tablet dose lost around 14% of their body weight over roughly 64 weeks, alongside diet and activity changes, compared with about 2% on placebo. Individual results vary, and the medicine is intended to support, not replace, healthy eating and exercise.

Like other GLP-1 medicines, the most common side effects are gastrointestinal, such as nausea, especially when starting or increasing the dose. In trials, around 7% of people stopped treatment because of side effects, similar to the injectable form. Your pharmacist will discuss the full safety information and check the medicine is right for you.
