About the annual flu jab

The flu vaccine helps protect you against the strains of influenza expected to circulate each winter. Because flu viruses change from year to year, a new vaccine is produced each season, which is why an annual jab is recommended. Most people have their vaccination in the autumn, ideally between September and early December, before flu is at its peak, but it is still worthwhile later in the winter.

The process is simple: you book an appointment, our pharmacist asks a few quick questions to check the vaccine is suitable for you, and the injection is given into your upper arm. The whole visit usually takes around 10 to 15 minutes, and your GP record is updated afterwards.

Do I have to pay for the flu vaccination?

Many people can get their flu vaccination free, funded by the NHS. At Crest Pharmacy you can get your free flu vaccination or you can pay privately if you don't qualify for a free jab.
  • Aged 65 or over (including anyone turning 65 by 31 March 2027)
  • Aged 18 to 64 with certain long-term health conditions
  • Pregnant women
  • People living in a care home, carers, people who live with someone with a weakened immune system
  • Frontline health and social care workers

    Your Flu Jab Questions

Flu can be much more serious than a bad cold, particularly for older people, pregnant women and anyone with a long-term health condition. Even if you're fit and healthy, the vaccine lowers your chance of catching flu, reduces how ill you get if you do, and helps protect vulnerable people around you, such as elderly relatives or young children.

No. The injected flu vaccine does not contain a live virus, so it cannot give you flu. Some people feel a little under the weather for a day or so afterwards, which is your immune system responding to the vaccine.

Side effects are usually mild and pass within a day or two. The most common are a sore, red or slightly swollen arm where the injection was given, a mild temperature, tiredness and aching muscles. Serious allergic reactions are very rare, and our pharmacists are trained to deal with them.

When you arrive, our pharmacist will check your details, ask a few health questions and explain the vaccine. You'll be taken into our private consultation room, and the injection itself takes just a few seconds. Wearing a short-sleeved or loose top makes it easier to reach your upper arm.

It takes around two weeks for your body to build up protection after the vaccination. Protection gradually fades over time, which is another reason to have the jab every year.

Yes. The flu vaccine is recommended at any stage of pregnancy and is free on the NHS. It helps protect both you and your baby, including in the first few months after birth.

If you have a high temperature or feel too unwell to carry on with your normal activities, it's best to rearrange. A mild cold without a fever is not usually a reason to postpone.
